Slow and steady wins the race. So goes the age old saying from the fable of the tortoise and the hare. But how does it apply to US small and mid-cap (SMID) companies? And is the asset class underappreciated by industry analysts? We explore the universe of US SMID companies in Fundamentals.

In the sixth episode of Fundamentals, Aoifinn Devitt, Head of Investment – Ireland delves into the world of US-domiciled small and mid-capitalisation companies. Devitt is joined by Mark Sherlock, Head of US Equities and Lead Portfolio manager of our US SMID capability, and Alex Knox, a portfolio manager for US equities.

Our US SMID capability focuses on high-quality companies that we believe possess a durable competitive advantage. Although these companies may be perceived as dull, Sherlock explains the team’s philosophy: “we firmly believe the tortoise beats the hare.”

During the podcast, Devitt also explores whether SMID companies in the US remain under-covered and underappreciated by industry analysts, the need to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles and how the asset class is weathering the coronavirus crisis.
