How did you get started in investment management?
I tried a few different careers earlier in my life. I was a PhD candidate in molecular biology, where I researched Alzheimer’s disease. After that, I worked as a software engineer. Eventually, I became a bond portfolio manager. So, my career path has taken a few detours. But I really enjoy my work now because it combines all my interests and skills.
Many different factors can impact the financial outcomes, so a broad background can be beneficial. For example, during the Covid-19 years, my biology background was helpful. And now, as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more popular, my software engineering experience is helpful.
How do you characterise your style as an investor?
Our goal is pretty simple. We want strong risk-adjusted returns. Basically, higher returns with lower risk. And to do that, we focus on diversification. We try to generate alpha from multiple places, including duration, yield curve, sector allocation, currency management, and security selection. So, we don’t put all our eggs in one basket, and we don’t swing for the fences. Overall, we are pretty old school.
What are the strengths of your team?
We have been working together for almost 20 years. So, we have a good time-tested process. Because we are multi-sector managers, we also work with a lot of other teams across the group. We focus on asset allocation, and our sector teams handle security selection.
So, our long experience and the fact that we work well with other teams are both major strengths.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy cooking, and I’m trying to improve my cooking skills. I also like sports. I love to play tennis, golf, go hiking, swimming, walking, and so on.
