Who’s next in the hot seat? In the latest episode of our ‘Meet the Manager’ series, Nick Tripodes, Portfolio Manager and Head of the Low Duration Structured Products team at Federated Hermes, explains how he has seen the firm evolve over three decades, what drives his team’s success, and his interests away from work.

My name is Nick Tripodes, and I’m a Portfolio Manager and Head of the Low Duration Structured Products team. We are responsible for all portfolio management of active cash and low duration products, and investment research and structured products including asset-backed securities (ABS) and commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS).

How have you seen the firm evolve over the years?

I’ve seen a lot of expansion, both domestically and internationally. Domestically in Boston and New York and other cities, and internationally with the acquisitions in London and other offices across the world.

How do you characterise your style as an investor?

We take a multi-sector approach, looking at all opportunities across the entire fixed income space, whether that’s government-related risk, ABS, investment grade corporates, or even non-investment grade.

We are looking for the best opportunities across all fixed income sectors. We’re active investors, not passive. And, although we look at the benchmark, we’re not focused on it when we’re making investment decisions.

What are the strengths of the Low Duration team?

The primary strength of the Low Duration team is really the experience. Every person on the team started off as either an investment-grade corporate or asset-backed securities credit analyst. This experience really helped us navigate challenging times, looking at the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, and volatility in interest rate markets.

What are your interests outside of work?

I have three children, and I’m a retired youth baseball coach for two of my sons. For my daughter, I’m very involved in YMCA princesses.

I am also active in my church – I’ve spent six years as a Parish council member and I’m also currently one of the chairs of the Endowment committee.

I’m a ticket holder for the Pittsburgh Steelers football team, and have been for a long time. I attend every home game, and for about 20 years I organised a trip to an away game with 40 of my closest friends. That had a good run but I retired from that a few years ago as well!
