Five misconceptions of company engagement
The role of an investor in addressing and improving a company’s environmental and social impact through engagement, is being increasingly recognised. However, it remains a young phenomenon for most and therefore many myths around approaches to engagement and a company’s willingness to change exist. In this note, Will Pomroy, Lead Engager of the Hermes SDG Engagement Equity Fund at Hermes Investment Management, puts to bed five misconceptions.

Is online shopping still in its prime?
In a few short years, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have been ingrained in the European retail calendar with outlets publicising their deals days or even weeks in advance. Gone are the days of hordes of consumers queuing outside shopping centres at 4am in a desperate bid to have their first pick of the sales with only a quarter of all Black Friday spending expected to take place in stores1. The queues have instead moved online, swapping the fresh air and elbowing for a comfortable chair, broadband connection and a few clicks of a mouse. With fears of oversaturation, Chi Chan, European Equities Portfolio Manager, asks whether the online market is still in its prime and identifies three companies involved in the online revolution.

Hermes Investment Management, the £33.6 billion manager, today announces that it plans to launch a Global Emerging Markets SMID (small- and midcap) strategy, subject to regulatory approval. (Note: Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results).

Egypt’s economic potential - Oasis or mirage?
From a distance, it is easy to conclude that Egypt is an arid environment for investors. Accounting for only 0.13% of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, the country is often overlooked given its questionable democracy, high rate of inflation, recent currency devaluation and twin deficits. Since the global financial crisis, Egypt has suffered a difficult decade characterised by political instability and economic turmoil.

Turning up the heat on climate change
In the new Equitorial, Louise Dudley, Global Equities Portfolio Manager at Hermes Investment Management, looks at how to assess and manage the investment risks associated with climate change as we transition to a low-carbon economy. “We need 2018 to be the year of investor leadership on climate change.” So said Mindy Lubber, CEO and President of sustainability non-profit Ceres, reflecting on the 2018 Investor Summit on Climate Risk at the United Nations on 31 January. At Hermes, we agree. Climate change is – both literally and metaphorically – a slow-burn issue, but the grave risk it poses over time is disconcerting.

Decoding Russia’s tech sector: a future alternative to oil?
During a recent research trip to Russia, we gained valuable insights into the country’s new economy. As the nation’s economic recovery begins to splutter despite a backdrop of higher oil prices, we ask: can Russia’s tech sector provide much-needed balance to the economy? Cyber-espionage accusations against Russia, state sanctions and poor governance have dominated news flow in recent years. The fundamentals of the country’s technology sector have been overshadowed by the state’s alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential campaign and hacking of state secrets and corporations. Russia’s tech sector pales in comparison to the country’s oil and gas industry in size, which produced an average of almost 11m barrels per day in 2017 – the highest level since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. But despite higher oil output and prices, the country’s economic recovery from its 2015-2016 recession remains anaemic. Russia’s economy grew 1.5% in 2017, undershooting its 2% target, after industrial production unexpectedly fell in November due to a slowdown in Russian defence spending. Consensus forecasts point to 1.9% GDP growth this year. Furthermore, at 7.5%, the Bank of Russia’s key interest rate further constrains growth.

Getting engaged: Uniting performance with positive change in emerging markets
“Companies do not exist in isolation: they use resources from the commons, employ labour and attract customers from towns and cities, and are required to operate under the laws of the land. They influence the lives of far more people than shareholders alone, but unfortunately plenty of businesses act to the detriment of many – including, in the long run, themselves and their investors.”

Imitator turned innovator: Technological change in China

How to position portfolios for an era-defining shift in monetary policy
After a decade of ultra-loose monetary conditions, the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of England have set the stage for a fourth quarter where all three could simultaneously begin to normalise policy. For long-term investors, there are key considerations: will the reversal of QE push bond yields higher? Will the imminent withdrawal of central bank stimulus puncture the buoyancy of global equity markets? What will it mean for emerging markets? And is a move towards simultaneous monetary policy normalisation the biggest danger facing markets in the fourth quarter?
